To the Editor:
I am writing to urge all Newton voters to join me in voting for Kathy Marchi for School Committee from Ward 1. As the former chair of the School Committee and a current member of the City Council, I believe that Kathy will be an excellent addition to the School Committee.
Kathy knows our school system well. As an employee of the Newton Public Schools, she served as the Director of The Newton Partnership, overseeing programs addressing the non-academic aspects of our students’ development, with a staff of nine and a million dollar annual budget. Kathy also was the Project Director on another federal grant, training community members to help young people experiencing mental health or addiction crises. Kathy has a master’s degree from New York University in student personnel administration and has a personal role model for the job – her mother served on the School Committee in Kathy’s hometown of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
In addition to her professional skills, Kathy has an impressive history of community involvement both within the schools and in Newton, including serving as the president of the Newton North High School Tiger Athletic Booster Club, as the executive director of the Child Care Scholarship Fund, and on the board of the Centre Street Food Pantry.
I believe that Kathy will be able to work collaboratively and effectively with her colleagues on the School Committee. Please vote for Kathy Marchi on November 7.
Councilor at-Large, Ward 7
